News Report: "Chamber to reinstate educational and training institute"

Published by Youri Kemp, The Nassau Guardian, May 27th, 2024

The executive director of the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers’ Confederation (BCCEC) said the Chamber Institute – the educational and training arm of the BCCEC – will be brought back within his first 100 days in office.

Dr. Leo Rolle told Guardian Business: “I know that we have been struggling for a while. But I think it’s just because we haven’t been as open in terms of hearing members. COVID brought the whole world to its knees and so a lot of the events that the Chamber was known for, have died away. One of the biggest things was the Chamber Institute. It will come back, it will be reinstated.”

He continued: “We are intentional about streamlining our benefits so that they match what the MSME (micro, small and medium enterprises) community is looking for. We’re also going to be more intentional about making sure that members have an opportunity for exposure.

“One of the greatest opportunities as a member of the Chamber is we serve the business community at large. I want to be inclusive with serial entrepreneurs, as well as fledgling entrepreneurs, where they can actually have an opportunity to collaborate. So, first showing them the benefits for them as an MSME, to being more intentional about our branding efforts and how we develop that and nurture that mentorship.

Often times the BCCEC is at odds with government policy, most recently the business license audits mandated by the Department of Inland Revenue, where BCCEC Chairman Timothy Ingraham voiced concerns over the readiness of his members to have full audits ready in time for business license renewals.

Rolle said: “When I think about bucking heads, I don’t look at it to say that we’re on one side and the government is on the other side. I think in all instances there is an opportunity for collaboration. And even if we disagree on a stance, at the end of the day, once we agree on whatever our final decision is, is in the best interests of the MSME community.”
