Hurricane season is a reminder that preparation should happen before a storm is on the horizon.
Whether you are preparing your household or getting your business ready, taking the time to plan can help protect people, property, important documents, and business operations. The Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers Confederation has put together a Hurricane Preparedness Checklist with practical tips to help individuals, families, and businesses prepare before, during, and after a hurricane.
For Individuals & Families
Personal preparedness starts with making sure you and your household have the essentials in place. This includes preparing an emergency supply kit, securing your home, protecting important documents, reviewing your emergency contacts, and knowing where you will go if evacuation becomes necessary.
It is also important to consider the needs of children, older family members, and pets when creating your household emergency plan.
For Businesses
Businesses should have a plan that goes beyond protecting the physical workplace. Before a storm, employers should review emergency procedures, communicate with employees, secure equipment and property, back up important data, and protect critical records.
Business owners should also consider how operations will be affected if employees cannot report to work, utilities are disrupted, or the business must temporarily close. Having a continuity plan in place can make it easier to resume operations once conditions improve.

The Bahamas has a various government organization, nongovernment organizations, and regional organizations which are valuable resources for businesses to use for disaster relief after a hurricane and manage potential damages after a hurricane.
Disaster Risk Management Authority (DRM): The DRM Authority is the leading organization in disaster preparation, resource, and recovery in mitigating resources. This would include community education and training, emergency planning assistance, real-time disaster response, post-disaster recovery support, and risk mitigation strategies. Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA): CDEMA is an interregional government agency that is meant to help disaster relief throughout the Caribbean as its primary responsibility for the coordination of emergency response and relief efforts to Caribbean nations that make up CDEMA. The Salvation Army Bahamas: Salvation Army is a part of the universal Christian Church the Salvation Army works closely with government agencies like the Department of Social Services and other Non-Government Organizations to provide relief supplies, rehabilitation materials, and counselling. It also leverages its regional and international networks to source additional resources and personnel for major hurricanes and catastrophes.
