Its mission is focused on fostering intellectual inquiry, leadership, and commitment to community through engagement of students and faculty members in a dynamic, life-long learning environment. It accomplishes this by providing “real world” education programs that prepare graduates to get ahead and stay ahead in today's competitive world.
The programs that are offered at the Bahamas Student Educational Center (SEC) through NSU’s H Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship and Fischler School of Education and Human Services are driven by this same mission. Faculty members are dedicated to the philosophy of providing top quality education in a collegial atmosphere and are committed to the pursuit of excellence. NSU’s uniquely designed flexible delivery formats allow the Bahamian students to fulfill their dream of higher education using a menu of learning options. These include classes that are offered ground based, online, via video-conference or in blended formats. These programs have great appeal for busy working professionals in a wide variety of fields or anyone who requires great flexibility and convenience in order to achieve their academic goals.
The Bahamian students, although located miles away from the NSU campus in Fort Lauderdale, have direct access to the university’s Library, Research and Information Technology Center that offers full collections of research materials, popular fiction and non-fiction books, CDs and DVDs. Easy access to over 280 specialized databases, periodicals, journals, e-books, document delivery, and academic advising services are just some of the student support services that distinguish NSU from other institutions.
This SEC, along with the other six Student Educational Centers located throughout the state of Florida, is integral to the university’s mission and has helped to make NSU the sixth largest independent institution in the United States and the largest independent institution of higher education in Florida with a student body of more than 28,000 and more than 110,000 alumni worldwide.
NSU has been serving the Bahamian Islands for more than 17 years. Beyond the rewards from NSU’s high quality academic programs, a large number of students attending the university have received significant benefits through the Senorita Strachan Scholarship Program offered by The H. Wayne Huizenga Schools of Business and Entrepreneurship as well as from The Bahamas Union of Teachers Scholarship Program.
The university is a member of the Association of Tertiary Institutions in The Bahamas (ATIB) and has established Transfer Credit Agreements with a significant number of community colleges in the islands.
The Bahamas Student Educational Center stands ready to accommodate the islands’ demands for other programs provided they are feasible and sustainable for both The Bahamas and the university. The SEC currently offers programs in the following fields:
